IN LATIN AMERICA
Despite limited resources and funding, the medical field is developing rapidly in Latin America. And even though every community does not regard it with the same importance as general medicine, dental and oral hygiene are vital aspects of overall wellness. Dental care internships in Latin America provide the opportunity to work alongside local dentists, dental hygienists, and other oral health professionals, as well as participate in educational initiatives and learn about international healthcare systems.
Dental internship placements are at private and public clinics, some of which specialize in orthodontics or other specialties. International interns are paired with local professionals and paraprofessionals to assist with patient consultation and treatment. You may also prepare materials, sanitize instruments, and perform administrative tasks. You’ll gain professional experience in dentistry, leave with a better understanding of oral healthcare in a developing country, and you’ll also strengthen your medical Spanish terminology. Intermediate Spanish is required for dental internship placements. If your Spanish proficiency is not at this level, Maximo Nivel offers online Spanish classes and in-person Spanish Immersion programs to help build your language skills.

As an international dental care intern, you’ll learn about a medical system that is both advanced and resourceful. You’ll work one-on-one with a local dentist or other oral health professionals to help provide quality dental care and promote community awareness. Depending on your previous training and experience, and Spanish level, you’ll either assist or shadow the dental professional you’ve been paired with.

Guatemala has the largest population in Central America, and its nationalized healthcare system is continuously strained. Medical professionals are often forced to work with inadequate resources, funding, and technology. This is especially true for dental and oral healthcare. As an international dental intern, you’ll learn how to provide patients with the best dental care possible in a limited resources environment. You’ll be partnered with a local dentist or other dental professionals at a public or private clinic where you’ll learn firsthand what is like to work in a developing country. Depending on your previous training and professional experience, and your Spanish level, you’ll either directly assist or shadow your assigned dental professional.

IN PERU
From the Andes to the Amazon, the rich fabric of Peruvian society is a completely unique environment for an international internship! As a dental intern in Peru, you’ll be paired with a local professional to assist with consultations and treatment. You may also educate community members about dental hygiene. Internships take place in private dental clinics, government-run health centers, and NGOs. Depending on your previous training and experience, and your Spanish level, you’ll either work with patients directly or shadow the dental professional you’re interning with.
