Step into the mystical heart of the Andes and discover the captivating city of Cusco, Peru. Situated amidst the towering peaks, this ancient Inca capital beckons travelers from around the world with its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. As an eager 18-year-old language enthusiast, I embarked on a life-changing journey to Cusco, immersing myself in the language and embracing the wonders this enchanting city had to offer. Upon arrival I was collected at the airport by the Maximo Nivel institute where I would be studying Spanish for the next 6 months. I was immediately spellbound by the city’s unique and fascinating beauty. The narrow cobblestone streets, lined with colorful colonial buildings, seemed to whisper secrets of the ancient world. The air was filled with the unmistakable aroma of local delicacies, enticing me to explore the culinary treasures that awaited.

My Spanish immersion program was an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture and connect with the warm-hearted Peruvian people. Maximo Nivel’s school is nestled in the heart of Cusco’s historic center, just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Plaza de Armas and across from Qorikancha. Here, I joined a diverse group of international students from the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, South Africa, and the Netherlands all eager to enhance our language skills while embarking on a voyage of self-discovery.

Each day, as the sun cast its golden rays upon the ancient city, we gathered in the Maximo Nivel cafeteria with free coffee for immersive language classes. Our teacher was passionate, and she expertly guided us through interactive lessons, incorporating local customs, idioms, and Peruvian history all without using one single word of English. We were forced to learn to communicate in Spanish, not like in my high school where my teacher spoke more English than Spanish. Through engaging conversations, role-plays, and language games, we quickly shed our language barriers and embraced the rhythm of the Spanish language. After the lessons, our afternoons were dedicated to exploring the wonders of Cusco. We wandered through the mystical ruins of Sacsayhuaman, marveled at the intricate stonework of Qorikancha, and embarked on breathtaking hikes in the nearby Sacred Valley. Every step offered a glimpse into the ancient civilization that once thrived here, leaving my mind blown by the ingenuity and wisdom of the Inca people.

One of the highlights of my stay was venturing into the legendary Machu Picchu. As the sun kissed the mountaintops, we embarked on an unforgettable train journey through the verdant valleys, witnessing nature’s masterpiece unfolding before our eyes. The train ride was in itself a magnificent journey winding through the Andean mountains. The hike up the mountain to see Machu Picchu was tough, but standing in the presence of this wonder, I felt an overwhelming sense of reverence and gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a marvel.

Cusco’s vibrant cultural scene provided endless opportunities for exploration. From lively festivals, where the streets erupted with music and dance, to indulging in traditional Peruvian cuisine, my senses were constantly delighted. I savored the mouthwatering ceviche, tasted the earthy flavors of alpaca meat, and even tried my hand at preparing authentic Peruvian dishes in a local cooking class. Each bite offered a tantalizing fusion of flavors, revealing the gastronomic wonders of the Andean region. I could ask questions about dishes and ingredients that I would not have been able to do without a guide had I not taken Spanish classes and been schooled not only in the language as I had expected, but also in the culture of this unique place.

But it was the warmth and generosity of the local people that truly left an indelible mark on my heart. Whether engaging in heartfelt conversations with locals at the bustling San Pedro Market or participating in community service projects, I was embraced with open arms by the Cusqueños. Their genuine smiles, infectious laughter, and immense pride in their heritage created an atmosphere of acceptance and belonging that made Cusco feel like a second home. Without improving my Spanish I would never have had the opportunity to get to know these wonderful people and I would never have made the connections I made in the city, I was accepted as a resident of Cusco and my standing in the city had gone beyond that of “turista” and changed into “amigo”
