Traveling between semesters has always captivated me. While spending time with my three siblings at home is fun, I have always yearned for new experiences. As a 23-year-old university student, I decided to broaden my understanding of Latin America before settling down to finish my final year. After researching, I chose three countries: Peru, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. Each country offers something unique, and I eagerly anticipated immersing myself in new cultures and making a difference. My biggest fear was that I wouldn’t be able to see and experience more than one country. The solution was the country jumper program, which turned out to be the best decision ever.

Touching down in Cusco, I was filled with excitement. The Maximo Nivel team greeted me at the airport, making me feel at home immediately. I was nervous about my limited Spanish, but they quickly got me settled. After a quick orientation, I was introduced to my host family. The next day, I dove into Spanish lessons and soon realized that learning Spanish in the heart of the Andes is the best form of immersion. Between classes, I visited historical sites and learned all the vocabulary needed for my summer adventures. Nervousness quickly turned into cautious optimism for the next three months. After three weeks, I was sad to leave but excited to see and learn more. The best part was that I could communicate a little. With my Alpaca wool sweater and Spanish notes in hand, I boarded the flight to Guatemala.

Next up was Antigua, Guatemala. The Maximo Nivel crew member was at the airport again, ready to guide me through the colorful streets of this colonial city. Volunteering here was inspiring. I loved teaching English and helping with community projects. The vibes in Antigua are unbeatable. You can’t help but fall in love with the place and its people. The architecture and colorful streets were inspiring, and I couldn’t stop taking pictures to show my friends and family online. Volunteering and giving back to the community was enriching. I created lesson plans and helped organize the community center where most classes were held. One weekend, between volunteering and touring the city, we drove forty minutes to San Vicente Pacaya. The hike was challenging, but we were motivated. We visited the only place to savor pizza cooked inside a volcano. It was an adventure, showcasing how creativity can blend with nature’s marvels, creating unforgettable experiences in the heart of Guatemala.

After a cozy yet chilly month in Cusco and a wonderful time in Antigua, I looked forward to the beaches near San Jose. The main objective was to visit during turtle nesting season. I joined a beach conservation project and even learned how to surf! The weekends spent on the beach were so relaxing after busy weeks. Knowing I was helping to protect the coastline made it even better. In Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio National Park, just a 2-hour drive from San Jose, I had a delightful encounter with a mother and baby sloth that left me smiling for days. As I strolled along the shaded paths, taking in the sights and sounds of the lush jungle, I spotted them lazily hanging from a branch. With slow movements, the mother cradled her tiny offspring, who peeked out curiously at the world below. It was a charming moment of tranquility, and I couldn’t help but pause to admire their adorable bond. Learning that the informal name for a sloth in Spanish can also mean lazy bear, I quickly scribbled the name into my Spanish notebook.

Every moment was enriching and memorable, whether learning Spanish in Cusco, volunteering in Antigua, or participating in beach conservation in Costa Rica. Throughout my travels, I was struck by the warmth and kindness of the people I met. From the Maximo Nivel team to the locals, their hospitality made me feel welcomed and appreciated wherever I went. I am grateful for the lessons learned and the friendships made. This adventure has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the diverse cultures of Latin America. I look forward to going back!
